Some
basic conditions to become a Secular Franciscan
Let's face it,
we're not going to become Saints overnight. We're all sinners in one way or
another. But in order to apply to join the Secular Franciscan Order, one
should be an active Roman Catholic already. Here are some other ideas:
-
One of the requirements is
that you must be a Baptized Roman Catholic, and that you've been
Confirmed. There is a minimum age (18)We are also looking for people
who regularly receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and receive the
Holy Eucharist frequently.
-
We accept people who are
married or single.
-
Are you a full participant
in the Liturgy and Life of the Roman Catholic Church?
-
If you have ever been a
member of SFO before, and there is a considerable lapse between that
period and the present, it may be necessary to undergo formation again.
-
If you are married, is
your marriage recognized by the Roman Catholic Church?
-
If you are married, does
your spouse understand and support your interest in the SFO?
-
If you are married, do you try to promote the dignity and unity of
marriage and family life?
-
If you are single, does your lifestyle reflect the moral principles of
the Catholic Church?
-
Secular Franciscans are called by their Rule to life the Gospel of
our Lord Jesus Christ and in full communion with the pope,
bishops and priests of the Church by following the example of St.
Francis of Assisi. Do you try to support the Church and her
teachings and give witness to Gospel values in your life, work, and
activities?
-
Secular Franciscans are called by their Rule to let prayer and
contemplation be the soul of all they are and do. Please reflect on
what forms of prayer you already practice in your daily life?
When you make application to
become a Secular Franciscans, do you indeed feel called to do so by the
Holy Spirit? Since we are an Order of the Catholic Church for lay persons,
and similar to other Orders in the Church, the applicant should discern a
vocation to the type of life we lead as noted, in part, above.
When you first come visit
with us, you are an "Observer," for a few months, generally not more than
six. If you then wish to continue your vocation... and further discern it,
you would come to the next step of "Inquirer" which takes six (6) months.
That leads to the next step, "Candidate" (18 months), which would be
followed by Profession. You will receive much instruction along the way,
and you will have ample time to discern what Our Lord wishes you to do.
