Today,
Pope Benedict XVI is with us in our Nation's Capital. Yesterday, he
arrived at Andrews AFB and was welcomed by President Bush and Mrs.
Bush. We're told that the President never welcomes a Head of State
at Andrews. This is indeed an honor for the Holy Father.
This morning, at 10:25 AM, the Holy Father was officially welcomed
on the South Lawn of the White House, where 9-12,000 people were in
attendance. It was 30 years ago, that a Pontiff visited USA. The
"Anthem of the Holy See" was played (first time I heard it),
followed by "The Star Spangled Banner," and the crowd sang Happy
Birthday to the Pope. The Lyric Soprano, Kathleen Battle sang the
"Our Father" accompanied by a harpist. After that, the President
spoke a short introduction. The the Pope talked for a time, ending
with "God bless America." The ceremony ended with the "Battle Hymn
of the Republic" sung by the U.S. Army Chorus and Band. /fss |
