From the Minister=s Desk:  Please remember:  A Day of Recollection has been scheduled for the eight fraternities in our East Central area  from 9 am to 3 pm on Wednesday, September 8.   Fr. Tom Murphy OFM will be the leader and will say Mass.  It will be held at San Pedro Center in Winter Park.  We are asked to bring lunch and snacks while beverages will be provided.  There is no fee involved for participants, but be prepared to make a small donation to help defray the moderate cost for the meeting room.  A few members from Vero have expressed an interest in attending - of course, we will plan to car pool.  Please consider coming with us as it’s a great opportunity to visit San Pedro and to meet and pray with Franciscans from other fraternities.

We welcome back Fr. Richard P. LaCorte, SFO within our midst, our Spiritual Assistant. Since he was  professed in Barrenspot, St. Croix, USVI as an Isolated Tertiary on April 24, 1981 and therefore, at this time is not connected to any fraternity, we asked Pam Nagle, and through her Fr. Tom, if Fr. Richard would be allowed to join our Fraternity. Normally a Spiritual Assistant is not encouraged to be a member of the fraternity he serves, but in his case an exception was made and so, since July 13, 2004, he is no longer “Isolated.” We all need the support of our Franciscan communities and so we’re glad. We praise God for His Grace in finding us a Spiritual Assistant and dear friend. Fr. Richard received the Profession of the original founding members on October 4, 1994 in the name of the Church and the Franciscan Order. Fr. Tom wasn’t able to be present that day. In October we’ll be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of that happy event.

According to Article 90 of the SFO Constitions, the principal task of the assistant is to communicate Franciscan spirituality and to co-operate in the initial and continuing formation of the brothers and sisters. The spiritual assistant is by right, with vote, a member of the council of the fraternity to which he or she gives assistance and collaborates with it in all activities.  The spiritual assistant does not exercise the right to vote in financial questions.
